The other day I was perusing my blog and noticed that basically ALL the posts on the front page were baby posts and not garden posts. But…such is life I guess, right? Plus I have a damn cute baby, so don’t hold it against me.
AAAAAANNNYYYYWAAAAYYY….
So last spring, I planted carrots. Some of them I harvested, but some I planted in a pot and for various reasons (PREGNANCY. MORNING SICKNESS. GENERAL LAZINESS.) I never harvested them. So rather than dumping them out in the fall (see previous reasons), I just kinda left them.
I HAD been planning on pulling them and doing a taste test, just to see if they still tasted OK after being planted for a year. Then, for various reasons (BABY. SLEEP DEPRIVATION. CATCHING THE BABY’S ILLNESS), I didn’t do it. Then the a while back, I noticed what looked like….flowers!
So it turns out that carrots do flower, which is how you get carrot seeds (which I guess I just never thought about before?). I’ve let them go, and now they’re even more flowery (they also got droopy, since I moved the container and disrupted all the roots that had grown out the bottom of the pot). In fact, my mom asked me a few weeks ago when she came over if I had potted up some Queen Anne’s Lace….which I totally JUST Googled and now I see that weed is WILD CARROTS! (Or a deadly weed, hemlock, which looks similar…so check that link above and beware before going carrot crazy.) wtf. I’ve always liked that “weed” and once remember my mom tell me that my grandmother was pretty fond of it, too. The world makes sense now! Or something.
I plan to let it finish flowering, then maybe gather some seeds, then pull the carrots and taste them for the heck of it. Maybe video the tasting if I feel brave. it could be scary.

Meanwhile, check out Cheeky Bingo. Play some online games and maybe win some of the Queen’s money (I think that’s how it works over there, right?). And seriously, click the link above if for nothing else than to see their amusing image selection and click on “meet the Cheekies” to see some actually kind of cute UK TV ads for them (though the chocolates one still kind of weirds me out). Silly Brits!
