Visit to the fair – inspiration for this year’s gardening

This past September, Ainsley made her first trip to the county fair. They give kids the day off here on Friday to go for free, but we went over the weekend. It wasn’t too hot or too wet (usually it seems it’s either 95 degrees or all muddy), so it was a nice trip. I’ll get to why I’m just now posting this after the pics.

I guess they put these on them to keep them clean before they are shown/sold? Cracked me up, though!

So – why am I just posting now? Well, after looking at all of those veggies and herbs and all their little award ribbons, I figured that would be a great inspiration/goal for my gardening this year. I have practically taken the past 2 years off – in 2010, I was newly pregnant and therefore sick feeling in the spring. And in 2011, we had a new baby. this year, though, Ainsley is big enough that I should be able to get out in the garden a bit more, and I’m definitely looking forward to it.

I want to submit a few things for judging, and I need to pick seeds accordingly. I generally go very well with herbs, so I plan to submit some basil, oregano, and maybe sage and verbena. It will give me a reason to keep things neat and pretty, and not let it go crazy and go to seed like usual. Dried herbs are a separate entry, so I may also submit some of those. I also do great with peppers, so I plan to submit some peppers (probably some single, some dried, and there is a separate entry for a combo of peppers, so maybe that). As the time gets closer, I will look up the categories and make more of a final decision. Some of the things don’t have many entries, so it may be an easy way to get a ribbon. And it’s been a long time since my last dance competition (which I have piles and piles of ribbons from), so darnit, I want a ribbon! Maybe a blue one??

Based on the 2012 program, here is what I am planning on entering (and how many I have to submit (I think that’s what the number means? Or is that the entry fee? No idea.)for the entry):
Banana Peppers, 5
Red Cayenne Peppers, 10
Jalapeno Peppers, 10
Any Other Hot Peppers, 10
Sweet Peppers – Dried Vegetable
Hot Peppers – Dried Vegetable
Mint – Dried Herbs
Basil – Dried Herbs
Oregano – Dried Herbs
Parsley – Green Herbs
Sage – Green Herbs
Rosemary – Green Herb
Mint – Green Herbs
Basil – Green Herbs
Oregano – Green Herbs
Peppers Collection, at least 4 each of 4 Varieties

Maybe…
Chocolate Chip Cookies (I think Will should enter a cheesecake.)
Canned Spaghetti Sauce, Meatless
Canned Salsa
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, red
Zinnia, one bloom 2″to 4″ in diameter, pink
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, orange
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, yellow
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, white
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, purple
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, green
Zinnia, one bloom 2″ to 4″ in diameter, any other color
Zinnia, 3 blooms up to 2″ in diameter, same cultivar, orange
Zinnia, 3 blooms up to 2″ in diameter, same cultivar, any other color

Weird random category that I kind of want to enter, but won’t: Original Character made with garden products (I’m sure there a ton more of these strange categories.)

Any readers ever entered the fair? There are lots of crazy rules, so I have to do some reading!

Post soon coming up with all the seeds I ordered and where from…

The number means how many you need for the entry.. peppers, 10 means 10 peppers

That’s what I thought, but I wasn’t totally sure. Thanks!
