Starting seeds on top of the dog kennel…

Think you don ‘t have room to start seeds in your house? Think again, buddy. For a couple years, I had the luxury of a pretty sweet setup in the “cat room” and the shed. Then the cat room became the baby’s room and the shed got hit by lightning, killing the shelf (it sort of exploded/melted).

But before that, I started seeds on top of my fridge.

2009: The seed-starting area on top of the fridge.

Almost everybody should be able to pull that off. And this year, I’m starting seeds on top of the dog kennel in the office. Yup. I bought a pair of under-bed storage boxes that are acting as a mini greenhouse and will allow me to easily transport the seedlings outside when it’s time. A couple of cheap desk lamps with fluorescent bulbs (and sunlight from the window) will keep them happy, along with misting to keep them moist. I would love to use my 2 seedling heat mats, but those are somewhere in the shed that is basically just a big pile of crazy right now, so hopefully the sunlight and lid help keep things warm enough. I just have to worry about keeping the cats off of them after the lid comes off and there’s delicious looking green stuff there…

I got a block of seed starting mix and mixed it up in an old lidded kitty litter container. I actually like doing it this way because the mix is pre-moistened when you go to add the seeds. Oh, and the containers I’m using are some peat pots I just got and some I had left over from last year, and some little plastic pots I got from the Dollar Tree years ago and have reused every year since then. (I checked and they don’t seem to be out this year, at least not yet.) I also always save 6-packs when I buy seedlings, so I have a stack of those out in the shed for when it gets warmer and I start stuff out there.

Here’s a pretty good illustration of the cat problem…

And because I’m keeping it real, here is how the rest of the room looks. TERRIBLE. This is the only room in the house where we can really toss stuff until it goes away, to storage, etc.  So here we have a mishmash of flooring stuff (it still needs to be repaired in Ainsley’s room from the termites), rugs that I’m trying to craigslist, crafty crap, random furniture, etc. I use the computer in here, and it’s also where all of Will’s uniforms and stuff are kept, so he gets dressed in here in the morning. It’s a catchall room that constantly drives me insane, especially since I probably spend more time in here than anyone. Also, apparently I hoard small lamps.

But I did get a chance to clean it up a bit, so it looks a whole lot better than it did last week. (Spy our new Craigslist dresser – $10! – in the corner…on which sits the printer that just broke. boooo.)

So, are you starting any seeds this year? Lack of space is NOT an excuse! I always buy some starts when it gets warmer, but enjoy starting my own seeds for things that can’t be found that way (like my black russian tomato….YUM).
