Seeds for 2013

As you read in a previous post, I am using the county fair as inspiration to grow this year, and to keep what I grow going through fall and pretty – so I can bring home some ribbons! (Maybe.) I’ve rounded up my seed order for the year (I think…), so here are the varieties I am planning on growing and where I am getting the plants/seeds from. I plan on using my cold frames to get starts out early (though not as early as I’d like). I definitely don ‘t have room to start anything in the house this […]

Visit to the fair – inspiration for this year’s gardening

This past September, Ainsley made her first trip to the county fair. They give kids the day off here on Friday to go for free, but we went over the weekend. It wasn’t too hot or too wet (usually it seems it’s either 95 degrees or all muddy), so it was a nice trip. I’ll get to why I’m just now posting this after the pics. Big pumpkins! Locally-grown tobacco, submitted for awards. Lots of other things after being judged for awards. Ainsley and I, checking out the chickens and cows and stuff. Waiting to be sold! Will was our […]

Lunch for People Who Hate Lunch.

I have a complicated relationship with lunch. Actually, it’s not complicated. It has been fairly well documented that I hate it. It’s not that I don’t want to eat at noonish, it’s that I can’t ever figure out something suitable to pack to take to work that I want to eat. I do have some peculiars: I am 99% a vegetarian. I eat chicken and turkey, as well as the very occasional perfectly crispy bacon. But not often (maaaaaybe once per week?) and not in large quantities (I can’t finish a chicken breast, usually). And for god’s sake, nothing with […]

Fall Cleanup! Finally!

Last weekend, I FINALLY got around to cleaning up the raised beds, moving the pots and other random assorted things from beside the shed, and doing a few other things on my (still not complete) fall cleanup list. When you don’t take summer vacation until after labor day, and then have all kinds of weddings and craziness after that, you tend to procrastinate on things like this (said Ms. Excuse Pants). Here are the “befores”. Yeesh. Not cute. As crappy as those tomato plants look, I am happy with the results of the ‘stake and tie’ method. I liked it […]

Super Easy Mexican Crock Pot Chicken

I had seen some somewhat similar recipes to this a while back, but couldn’t find the exact recipe when the time came. So last week I tossed a bunch of stuff in the crock pot that seemed like it would work…and it was frigging amazing! (And hard to photograph in an appetizing way.) As per my usual recipes, I’m not being exact. But you can mess with the amounts based on how much you want to make. SUPER EASY MEXICAN CROCK POT CHICKEN 4 frozen boneless skinless chicken breasts 1 can of your favorite salsa 1 block of cream cheese […]
