How to fix leggy seedlings

I am starting my seedlings this year under some office lights, in a storage bin, in front of a window, on top of the dog kennel. They get pretty good light, but some still get a bit leggy. And while eventually they’re just too leggy and it’s difficult, it IS easy to fix legginess in some seedlings, like tomatoes. This little guy qualifies as a bit too leggy for my liking. (Yes, I should also snap off one of those plants to avoid crowding…) See, tomatoes are actually sort of a vine. If you’ve ever had a butt-ton of cherry […]

WIN Stevia and seed storage bags!

I’ve outlined how I’m starting seeds this year already. In part of my efforts to be more organized, I also ordered some little plastic baggies to store seeds. Usually, I just fold over the top of the bag them come in and stick them in a box, but that always risks them spilling out when I go through things, and that sucks. These I got from Amazon for super-de-duper cheap. If you want to order your own, these are the ones I got (I actually got 2 sizes, but the second size hasn’t come in yet): They’d also be great […]

Seeds for 2013

As you read in a previous post, I am using the county fair as inspiration to grow this year, and to keep what I grow going through fall and pretty – so I can bring home some ribbons! (Maybe.) I’ve rounded up my seed order for the year (I think…), so here are the varieties I am planning on growing and where I am getting the plants/seeds from. I plan on using my cold frames to get starts out early (though not as early as I’d like). I definitely don ‘t have room to start anything in the house this […]

Starting seeds on top of the dog kennel…

Think you don ‘t have room to start seeds in your house? Think again, buddy. For a couple years, I had the luxury of a pretty sweet setup in the “cat room” and the shed. Then the cat room became the baby’s room and the shed got hit by lightning, killing the shelf (it sort of exploded/melted). But before that, I started seeds on top of my fridge. Almost everybody should be able to pull that off. And this year, I’m starting seeds on top of the dog kennel in the office. Yup. I bought a pair of under-bed storage […]

Beets by Dre (and Radishes)

OK, no. Kidding. But that totally cracks me up. So Friday I was off (I am off every other Friday since I work 9 hour days – it’s GREAT) and it was AMAZINGLY GORGEOUS. Which is great since the whole rest of the weekend was cold cold cold and windy. So anyway. After we took a walk, Ainsley took a nice nap and I was able to get outside and get a few seeds in the ground! It’s too cold for most things yet (though when I gt my hands on a decent container, I am going to try to […]
